Hope Empowers began in 2022 by Patrick Ssenyonjo, who was a child from the slums. With 15 years’ experience serving slum children through Raising Up Hope for Uganda, he saw a huge, unmet need to train older street boys with a skill – a ‘last chance’ opportunity to escape slum life. His vision was a 1-year program to get kids stabilized in a residential setting, teach a vocational skill and resettle them as productive members to their familial community. From here, Hope Empowers was born.

Our community outreach quickly found a need to minister to unwed, pregnant girls. The Esuubi (Hope) Program started in August 2022

I interviewed my dad on video in his final weeks. When I asked about his work and finding meaning through helping others, he responded, “I don’t think you can be focused on, ‘Oh gee, I want to make a difference.’ It has to be spontaneous. If it’s not…there’s some kind of egotistical thing going on. That’s a red flag. You hope you impact people on the deepest level you are capable of at the time. Sometimes you hit it, sometimes you don’t. You’re trying.
