Calling all youth ages 15-29: Learn to Teach Someone 1-on-1

Description: A free virtual summer program for students who want to gain leadership skills, enhance their communication abilities, learn to be more persuasive, receive valuable experience for post-secondary applications, and get volunteer hours. This program has been provided to over 300 post-secondary students at York University enrolled in Teachers College. We’ve adapted it for all interested youth (ages 15+)! Program dates: July 4th to September 2nd Here’s what you will do: You will meet with our team on Zoom and get trained on how to teach. You will teach at least 2 people (e.g. an adult, a senior in your neighbourhood) a skill you have, once or twice a week. It could be technology skills, English skills or something else. You will continue to meet with our team on Zoom 2-3 times a week. You’ll talk about your successes and challenges, and learn new skills. The program is run by a subject-matter expert who has trained over 5,000 students to become amazing elementary and high school teachers. He has taught at York University, University of Toronto, and several US universities (e.g. UConn, Drake University). Here’s what you will learn: How to give clear & step-by-step instructions; Techniques for patience when dealing with challenging situations; Picking the right words to communicate things clearly and concisely; Changing your instruction style for people who learn in different ways; Creating your own lesson plans; Learning different ways you can evaluate if someone is learning what you’re teaching them; and Customized feedback, depending on your specific needs Here’s how you will benefit: Get lots of volunteer hours (over 100+ hours); Get a reference letter for a job, scholarship, or a post-secondary / teachers college application; Get a certificate and a LinkedIn recommendation upon successful completion of the program; Get real-life experience teaching someone (1-on-1 or in small groups); Improve communication, problem-solving, creativity and integrative-thinking skills; and Learn what University students are learning, for free. We believe education is the most powerful tool in the fight against climate change. POSITION Help fight against climate change by joining our team at ClimateScience! As a Community Coordinator, you would help recruit people to be a part of our team, actively participate in meetings and events, form partnerships with schools and organizations, and learn more about climate change through our website. Virtual/Remote VOLUNTEER BOARD MEMBER – SUICIDE PREVENTION

Description: Volunteer from your couch or desk. Be actively involved with suicide prevention by volunteering for the CASP Board of Directors. Meetings are held online using Zoom from anywhere in Canada you can connect to internet. Deadline to apply is August 21st. We need help with charity law, board governance, public relations and more... CASP aspires to be a leading voice for advocacy, communication and education for suicide prevention, intervention, postvention and life promotion within Canada and ensure that our efforts are inclusive of the diverse perspectives and circumstances of those across our Country impacted by suicide. We invite individuals who are currently living permanently in Canada and who have an interest in suicide prevention and are committed to using their skills in support of a nationally focused body to apply to volunteer on our Board of Directors. Term and Location Directors will serve for a term of three years with eligibility for reappointment for a second consecutive term of three years. The Board meets virtually via video-conference calls on the fourth Wednesday of each month, except July and August, from 12:00pm -1:30pm Eastern time. There are also two in-person meetings within Canada annually (one of which is during the National Conference in May). These positions will commence September 28, 2022, at the end of the AGM meeting. Time Commitment Meetings of the Board of Directors are 90 minutes in duration once a month from September to June. Directors are expected to also participate on at least one board committee, which meet monthly for one hour (and as needed); and must make reasonable efforts to attend all scheduled meetings. Additionally, Board members should plan to be accessible for contact by email in between Board meetings. Skills and Experience The nomination and selection process is designed to maintain a board composition that includes experience and competency in various areas. We are seeking to add experience in the following areas: Charity Law Board Governance Human Resources Management Fundraising Communications/Media Public Relations/Public Affairs Board members must be able to work in English (read, write, speak). The ability to also work in French, Indigenous languages, or any other language is an asset. Board Members Responsibilities Prepare in advance for decision-making and policy formation at Board meetings; take responsibility for self-education on the major issues before the Board. Responsibly review and act upon committee recommendations brought to the Board for action. Participate in the annual Board development and planning retreat. In general, utilize personal and professional skills, relationships and knowledge for the advancement of CASP. Engagement in fundraising activities. It is a 11-month hands-on advocacy and leadership training program for volunteers that will develop their skills in generating the political will to end extreme poverty in low- and middle-income countries. It is open to individuals aged 18 years and older who are based in Canada.
